Automating the development of construction schedules has been an interesting topic for researchers around the world for almost three decades. Researchers have approached solving scheduling problems with different tools and techniques. Whenever a new artificial intelligence or optimization tool has been introduced, researchers in the construction field have tried to use it to find the answer to one of their key problems-the "better" construction schedule. Each researcher defines this "better" slightly different. This article reviews the research on automation in construction scheduling from 1985 to 2014. It also covers the topic using different approaches, including case-based reasoning, knowledge-based approaches, model-based approaches, genetic algorithms, expert systems, neural networks, and other methods. The synthesis of the results highlights the share of the aforementioned methods in tackling the scheduling challenge, with genetic algorithms shown to be the most dominant approach. Although the synthesis reveals the high applicability of genetic algorithms to the different aspects of managing a project, including schedule, cost, and quality, it exposed a more limited project management application for the other methods.

To meet the development trend of the multi-project operations, this paper describes the concepts of project family and general work breakdown structure (GWBS), and then presents a data mining approach to forming GWBS. Work breakdown structure (WBS) instances are represented by a tree graph, and then we propose a similarity metric between a pair of WBS trees. The results of the pairwise comparisons are used as a distance metric for the following k-medoids clustering algorithm that groups the project WBSs into project families. Each classified cluster represents a project family, and it is expressed by a GWBS. Since the GWBS comes from large amount of historical WBS data, its adaptability and configuration ability are improved effectively, and all of these provide a strong guarantee for enterprises to respond quickly to customer needs.

Work breakdown structures are the base for project management. The quality of work breakdown structures of automobile R&D project directly affects the control of the process of automobile new product development in time, cost, scope, quality and other aspects. In order to improve the quality of work breakdown structures, the paper introduces Plan-Do-Check-Action cycle and develops a distinct process model by integrating the objective management and process management. The model contains four key indicators, such as scope, awareness, responsibility and risk, to evaluate the quality of work breakdown structures in the process. The paper also presents specific tools and methods to the implementation of the model with example.
