Designing with Alganyl

Abstract: Figure 1: (a) We explored designing with Alganyl, a vinyl-like material made from marine algae, by embedding color, patterns, texture, thermosensing and photosensing. We used Alganyl to made a wide range of applications including (b) a floral sculpture, (c) doll clothing, and (d) a transparent concert bag.

“…Subsequent works (e.g., [9,33,58]) have explored the impact of various design paradigms on sustainability. In particular, prior efforts have demonstrated methods to reduce the environmental impact of waste generated during the design process by utilizing decomposable and recyclable materials [13,30,47,50] or bio-materials [4,5,20,28,34]. However, materials with unique properties are often not easily replaceable with eco-friendly alternatives, which may require special fabrication processes [45] or certain levels of manual manipulations [6,36,55].…”

“…Additionally, rings are personal yet also visible objects, reminding themselves of their wearers and others throughout the day. To create rings, I have readapted the recipe from ALGANYL (Bell et al, 2022) and aimed to create an experience that opens an emotional space and is effortless to close. The compostable nature of the bio-ring allowed me to fulfill that aim.…”
