Designing the distribution network in a cassava supply chain in Thailand

Abstract: According to Thailand's infrastructure development and investment plan, an efficient transportation network will take form over the next three to five years. Dual-track railway will be built to cover more areas of the country and will be offered more routes between central, northeastern , and eastern Thailand. Therefore, rail transportation or train transportation will become a good choice or an important conveyance of goods from various origins to various destinations in Thailand due to its competitiveness wh… Show more

“…Several studies have been conducted in multimodal transportation of cassava products in Thailand. Timaboot and Suthikarnnarunai [8], for example, presented a concept of designing the new distribution network of cassava supply chain in Thailand using rail as a major mode of transportation. Uabharadorn [9], on the other hand, discussed key areas of multimodal transport and logistics services, such as demand of freight transport, logistics costs, modal shift, effect of transport costs on trade, and the government policy and action plans towards the development of multimodal transport and logistics services and the areas of improvement.…”

“…Research on applying goal planning is very diverse and present in many fields, but there are very few studies on the cassava industry proposed a set of environmental indicators used in cleaner production assessment and applied a mathematical planning model for pollution reduction for the manufacturing plant [43,44]. The study conducted by [45] provides a model to optimize transporting costs of cassava to processing facilities. In addition, the transport issue is also integrated in the studies of Takeshima and Winter-Nelson [44]; [43] calculated the transportation costs in the total purchasing cost for optimization.…”

“…However, the logistics cost of road transportation is higher than rail and ship modes. Moreover, Thailand confronts road transportation limitations including maximum acceptable weight, traffic congestion and high fuel prices [5]. Dealing with these problems, the multimodal connection from roads to container yards (CY) and ports is expected to decrease logistics cost, and increase various opportunities to trade with neighbouring countries [6].…”

“…In general, block rubber has a low price and low value [5]. The most effective transportation mode for block rubber is the mode that can carry them in large volume [5] which is the characteristics of multimodal transportation.…”
