Designing Raw Mix for Manufacturing Portland Cement using Euphrates Formation Marl Instead of Clays

Abstract: Portland Cement is manufactured by adding 3% gypsum to clinker which is produced by grinding, pulverizing, mixing, and then burning a raw mix of silica, and calcium carbonate. Limestone is the main source of carbonates, while clay collected from arable land is the main source of silica. The marl in the Euphrates Formation was studied as an alternative to arable lands. Nine boreholes drilled and penetrated the marl layer in selected locations at the Kufa cement quarry. Forty-one samples of marl from boreholes a… Show more

“…The information on the stratigraphic sequence was obtained through the wells that were drilled by [1], as they penetrated the Euphrates formation. The age of this formation dates back to the Lower Miocene, consists of light to dark limestone that contains: Bituminous and fossils in some of its upper parts, As well as containing marly limestone, dark to light colored marl, and this corresponds to the lithological description of the same formation in Najaf Governorate [6], [7]. There is no significant heterogeneity in the lithology formation between the upper part of the formation and the lower part of the Fatha formation above it.…”

“…Since some of these sedimentary cycles are integrated or lack one of the four aforementioned components, the most important characteristic of the Al-Mishraq region is the mineralization of gypsum and anhydrite rocks into Recrystallized sulphureous limestone and secondary limestone [2], [4]. The components of AL-Fatha formation of the aperture are different, they are limestone and siltic, when the sea is open, and when the sea is blocked, this leads to the formation of deposits of evaporites of the type of gypsum, anhydrite and salty substances, but the facies of the evaporites are dominant in the AL-Fatha formation [5], [1].…”
