Designing multimodal carbon nanotubes by covalent multi-functionalization

Abstract: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are a unique tool in nanotechnology owing to their exceptional properties that offer a variety of opportunities for applications in different fields. Nevertheless, their low dispersibility in organic solvents and in aqueous media hampers their development. The functionalization of their surface allows overcoming this issue, while exploiting and tuning their properties. Thanks to their high specific surface area, multi-functionalization strategies give the possibility to conjugate severa… Show more

“…Moreover, they can be used to perform thermal ablation [44], as well as to detect Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) [45] or specific antigens, likewise tumor markers [46]. All these properties can be combined together to create a multifunctional tool by means of multiple functionalizations as thoroughly described in [47]. Basically, two kinds of functionalizations can be done on CNTs: covalent or non-covalent.…”

“…The next ideal step, then, is to combine all of the pros in a single technique avoiding all of the cons. For this reason, many research groups are working on multimodal CAs that can exploits all of the benefits deriving from each technique [47,97,98]. CNTs are an ideal platform for this duty due to the multiple types of functionalizations that are possible to perform on them [99].…”

“…Mild oxidation followed by secondary covalent functionalization can tune the CNTs to carry a genetic load, targeting ligand, and a fluorophore for multi-modal applications. [40,41] To summarize, it was demonstrated through different investigations that f-CNTs are better suited for biological applications than pristine nanotubes.…”

“…have successively carried out 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition reaction in the presence of protected amino acids and paraformaldehyde to form MWCNTs based drug delivery system. Mild oxidation followed by secondary covalent functionalization can tune the CNTs to carry a genetic load, targeting ligand, and a fluorophore for multi‐modal applications . “…14 This scheme has been widely employed not only for altering the SWCNT electronic structure but also for grafting functional moieties with multiple anchoring possibilities. 15 More recently, the diazonium chemistry of SWCNTs has been used for the creation of bright, fluorescent quantum defects. Changes in SWCNT photoluminescence through covalent sidewall functionalization have proven enormously versatile.…”
