An ever increasing number of interconnected embedded devices, or Machine-to-Machine (M2M) systems, are changing the way we live, work and play. M2M systems as a whole are typically characterized by the diversity in both the type of device and type of network access technology employed, and such systems are often still today task-specific and built for just one specific application. Smart lighting, remote monitoring and control of all kinds of consumer devices and industrial equipment, safety and security monitoring devices and smart health and fitness products, exemplify this revolution of intercommunicating machines. However, the differences in communication technologies and data formats among such devices and systems are leading to a huge complexity explosion problem and a strongly fragmented market, with no true interoperability. Due to these problems, the full potential of M2M technology has yet to be fulfilled. In this paper, we examine the suitability of the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) and experiment with its potential to rise to the challenge of machine-to-machine communications and meet the needs of modern pervasive applications. Experimental implementations and some proof-of-concept solutions are also presented.

Recent years marked many smart environment solutions hitting the market and applying latest pervasive computing research advancements on an industrial scale. Context-aware smart environments are able to act accordingly to the immediate environment information in an intelligent, predefined, learned, or automatically inferred way, and are able to communicate to their users, thus increasing users’ comfort and awareness level. Since the beginning of the 2000s, many projects have been designing and implementing smart environment systems. When looking post-factum at the architectures of these systems, one can notice a lot of similarities among them. With the same basic structure, the biggest differences usually arise at the level of individual components, aimed to satisfy different end-level requirements. Taking many successful and undergoing projects as case-studies, this chapter looks for the common structure, the common patterns, and the “best practices” that can help future projects to reduce the efforts spent on the general system frame, and redirect those efforts to more specific requirements that are unique in every project. It introduces several architecture layers that inevitably exist in one form or another, discusses the possible layer components and the common information flows, and mentions the most notable problems, such as scalability and fault tolerance. Several case studies of successful or undergoing smart building projects show that the presented pattern can be easily mapped to their architectures.

The Internet of Things vision states that sensors and actuators shall be integrated into the global Internet to facilitate an interaction with and integration of the physical environment. The development of enabling technologies like uIPv6 and 6LoWPAN provide the basic requirements for this interconnection. However, a seamless Internet-connection and interconnection between sensors and actuators can still only be provided with the help of protocols that use gateways, intermediate proxies, and protocol translators. We propose a solution to unify the world of sensors and actuators with the Internet through the use of the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) while omitting application protocol gateways and protocol translators at the same time. This article describes our ideas to boost the Internet of Things vision by using XMPP. We present our current work in progress and an outlook into our future working directions in this field.
