Designing laboratory metallic iron columns for better result comparability

Abstract: Despite the amount of data available on investigating the process of aqueous contaminant removal by metallic iron (Fe(0)), there is still a significant amount of uncertainty surrounding the design of Fe(0) beds for laboratory testing to determine the suitability of Fe(0) materials for field applications. Available data were obtained under various operating conditions (e.g., column characteristics, Fe(0) characteristics, contaminant characteristics, oxygen availability, solution pH) and are hardly comparable to… Show more

“…Accordingly, Fe 0 filtration systems must contain less than 50 % (w/w) Fe 0 to be sustainable. The presented work has also validated the suitability of using limited amount of Fe 0 (here 100 g) to investigate relevant processes within reasonable experimental duration (here 4 months) [50]. The rationale for the selection of the admixing materials (e.g.…”

“…2) is a further confirmation of assumption 4 ("all Fe 0 /sand systems should be more efficient that pure sand system") as the observed anomaly results from the particular difficulty to uniformly mix Fe 0 and sand when Fe 0 is in volumetric abundance. It should be recalled that sound theoretical works [50] have proven the needlessness of testing these volumetric proportions. Therefore, it…”

“…This empirical approach is certainly costly but not necessarily effective [121][122][123]. An alternative approach is to develop the science of the system, which will serve as compass to evaluate experimental results [25,130,131].…”

“…A methodology to compare the intrinsic reactivity of Fe 0 materials was introduced [133], and was recently revisited [132,134], however it is yet to receive universal acceptance. On the other hand, a universal design rationale for the design of Fe 0 filters was presented by Noubactep and Caré [130,131] and progressively revisited [25,98,[121][122][123].…”
