Designing Interventions that Last: A Classification of Environmental Behaviors in Relation to the Activities, Costs, and Effort Involved for Adoption and Maintenance

Abstract: Policy makers draw on behavioral research to design interventions that promote the voluntary adoption of environmental behavior in societies. Many environmental behaviors will only be effective if they are maintained over the long-term. In the context of climate change and concerns about future water security, behaviors that involve reducing energy consumption and improving water quality must be continued indefinitely to mitigate global warming and preserve scarce resources. Previous reviews of environmental b… Show more

“…Thus, landholders may be influenced by different motivations and barriers to adopt a project, as compared to maintaining a project (Moore & Boldero, 2017). Establishing stock exclusion is subsidized, however, maintenance involves costs associated with growing or purchasing additional feed for stock to compensate for lost fodder after the exclusion of stock from grazing riverbanks.…”

“…On a macro level, these factors are represented in aggregated form with realistic profiles. Second, the change of user behaviour, where aspects such as rebound effects, sufficiency, or grid-friendly behaviour play a role and where it is essential to identify factors and interventions that can effectively and reliably change behaviour (e.g., [137]). Of particular interest are aspects such as which technologies are used by whom and when, as well as the willingness-to-accept (WTA) or to adapt their demand according to, e.g., external controls of operation schedules for home storage systems or electrical vehicles to facilitate grid-friendly demand (e.g., [138]).…”

“…Although most studies employ only a single type of intervention, research has found that behaviour change interventions are most effective when combining antecedent and consequent strategies (Abrahamse et al, 2005). The Live Lagom project is based on this notion and includes multiple elements tackling a range of different underlying motives to help promote lasting lifestyle change across behavioural domains (Moore & Boldero, 2017).…”
