Designing HVDC GIS/GIL spacer to suppress charge accumulation

Abstract: To suppress the charge accumulation on the spacer surface in direct current (DC) gas insulated transmission line (GIL) is an important and emergent issue for the development of a clean, safe and economic smart grid. A design method of the DC spacer is proposed, and a spacer prototype is prepared and evaluated both by simulation and type test. The DC withstand voltage test and polarity reversal test are performed using the new DC spacer compared with a commercialised 220 kV AC spacer. The simulation results ind… Show more

“…To satisfy the increasing voltage level and complex operating conditions, higher requirements are put forward for the reliability and stability of gas insulated transmission lines (GILs), especially in high voltage direct current transmission systems [1][2][3][4][5]. Among the types of GIL accidents, insulator failure could bring irreversible damage, which is usually * Author to whom any correspondence should be addressed.…”

“…The current research on the structure of the DC basin-type insulator is still very scarce, and most of them are simple exploratory or tentative studies. Liang et al optimised the shape of the insulator by adjusting the tilt angle to change the surface normal electric field [18]. Instead of employing any optimisation algorithm, Zebouchi et al performed a parametric sweep of selected geometric control parameters to obtain the optimal insulator shape [19].…”
