Designing for assets of diverse students enrolled in a freshman-level computer science for all course

Abstract: Proficiency in computer science skills is crucial for today's students to succeed in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields and the modern workforce. Despite this fact, few universities count computer science (CS) classes toward the core curriculum. Our university, a Hispanic-and minority-serving research-intensive university located in the American Southwest, recently began counting CS towards fulfilling the laboratory science requirement in the undergraduate core curriculum. This allo… Show more

“…CSP builds on research dedicated to emphasize asset-based approaches to education that counter the deficit models that have persisted in education [35]- [37]. CSP includes work on funds of knowledge [38], hybrid spaces [39], culturally responsive pedagogy [40], and culturally relevant pedagogy [29].…”

“…For example, students can be tasked with rewriting engineering problems for scenarios and contexts that are more relevant to their backgrounds [24], [25]. Another potential strategy may be to create multiple, explicit avenues in design projects where students can make design decisions and incorporate their choices into the design process (see Table 1 in [26]).…”

“…CSPs can help mitigate the effects of implicit biases and create a more equitable learning environment for all students by valuing and acknowledging all students' diverse cultural backgrounds and experiences [18]. Additionally, asset-based pedagogy that values diversity and inclusivity is critical for reducing STEM inequities [22]. The Association of College and University Educators offers a list of inclusive practices that can be readily incorporated into any classroom [6].…”
