Designing Effective Marine Protected Areas in Seaflower Biosphere Reserve, Colombia, Based on Biological and Sociological Information

Abstract: Ecologists have paid increasing attention to the design of marine protected areas (MPAs), and their design advice consistently recommends representing all habitat types within MPAs or MPA networks as a means to provide protection to all parts of the natural ocean system. Recent developments of new habitatmapping techniques make this advice more achievable, but the success of such an approach depends largely on our ability to define habitat types in a way that is ecologically relevant. We devised and tested the… Show more

“…Despite the relative ease of habitat mapping tropical marine habitats, and the need to quantify biodiversity for marine reserve selection algorithms (e.g., Sala et al 2002, Leslie et al 2003, few empirical studies evaluate the adequacy of remotely sensed habitat maps as biodiversity surrogates. Friedlander et al (2003a) used habitat maps and the distinct inter-habitat differences in coral and fish communities to aid the design of an effective marine protected area in Colombia. In Panama, there was only a weak positive correlation between benthic diversity and the number of geomorphological zones in an area, regardless of the taxa considered, and this suggested that habitat types would be a better surrogate (Andre´foue¨t and Guzman 2005).…”

“…Literature on MPA design and management highlights the importance of: (1) connectivity when reserves are small and representation among eco-regions (Adulla et al 2008;Guarderas et al 2008;Gaines et al 2010); (2) suitable management regimes (e.g., Friedlander et al 2003;Vella et al 2009;Olsen et al 2011); and (3) MPA distribution vis-á-vis areas of cumulative impacts (e.g., Planes et al 2000;Coll et al 2011). The first issue assumes principles of biological conservation, especially for the marine environment (Gaines et al 2010).…”
