Designing Dimeric Lanthanide(III)‐Containing Ionic liquids

Abstract: Herein, we report on the preparation of liquid dimeric lanthanide(III)-containing compounds. Starting from the design of dimeric solids, we demonstrate that by tuning of anion and cation structures we can lower the melting points below room temperature, whilst maintaining the dimeric structure. Magnetic measurements could establish the spin-spin interactions of the neighboring lanthanide(III) ions in the liquid state at low temperatures, and matched the interactions of the analogous crystalline solid compounds. “…Alvarez-Vicente et al prepared and characterized the [P 66614 ][LnCl 6 ] and [P 4444 ][LnCl 6 ] of the entire Ln 3+ series plus Y 3+ and Sc 3+ , as well as the [P 4448 ][LnCl 6 ] analogs for Ln = Ce, Nd, Sm, Tb, Dy, and Er [ 66 ]. The entire [P 66614 ][LnCl 6 ] series, with the longer alkyl chains in the phosphonium, is composed exclusively of room temperature ionic liquids, as commonly found for this cation [ 67 , 68 , 69 , 70 ], with melting points (m.p.) between −58 and −40 °C, with the exception of the La 3+ -IL at –1.6 °C.…”

“…37 Therefore, the introduction of rare earth ions enhances the magnetic susceptibility of M(P)ILs. 38 Meanwhile, lanthanide M(P)ILs show significant advantages in luminescent applications due to their high color purity, 39 high color intensity, 40 and long lifespan 41 of fluorescence. In our group, 42 we synthesized a perylene diimide (PDI)-based Gd-containing magnetic ionic liquid Per-6-Diimi[Gd(NO 3 ) 4 ].…”
