Designing and implementing a positive body image program: Unchartered territory with a diverse team of participants

Abstract: This article highlights the use and importance of action research in creating a new positive body image program. The purpose of the larger action research project was to design, test, and implement a positive body image program by working with a core group of diverse stakeholders from an exercise facility. Stakeholders included older adults (aged 55þ), people with physical disabilities, and those with cardiovascular disease or risk factors, populations rarely included in the body image literature, particularly… Show more

“…The score differences between the two conditions (6.75 points of improvement in the experimental group vs. 0.75 points in the control condition, p = 0.000) are in line with what positive body image theory claims, i.e., that self-image satisfaction can be fostered (Tylka and Homan, 2015;Homan and Tylka, 2018). This experimental study is also coherent with other studies suggesting that tailored programs with specific scopes are better instruments than preventive interventions that are nonspecifically orientated (Roses-Gómez, 2014; Kilpela et al, 2015;Hudson et al, 2016;McCabe et al, 2017;Mellor et al, 2017;Bailey et al, 2019). Besides, our results also show the goodness of design of the IMAGINA program by Sánchez-Cabrero (2012) when used with participants over 50 years old.…”

“…As for intervention programs aimed at improving body image, the scientific literature shows that these produce outstanding results, from the classics of Cash (1997) and PICTA, Maganto et al (2002), to current ones, such as those of, Kilpela et al (2016), McCabe et al (2017), and Bailey et al (2019). However, none of them are intended for mature people, focusing instead on adolescent or young people, and mainly on the female population, except for the IMAGINA program by Sánchez-Cabrero (2012).…”

“…En el test BSQ, se produce una mejora de 6.75 puntos de media en los participantes al programa específico aplicado sobre imagen corporal, por solo 0.75 en la condición de control. Esta mejora es clara, por lo que se puede concluir que el programa específico aplicado sobre imagen corporal incrementa la satisfacción corporal de los participantes significativamente más que otros programas preventivos inespecíficos o que la propia maduración experimental (Bailey et al, 2019;Rosés-Gómez, 2014;Halliwell et al, 2016).…”

“…Using an online survey and collecting both quantitative and qualitative data, the developmental phase of the CAP can be discussed not only by influential facilitating and hindering factors but the quality of the action research project can be reviewed. Similar to Bailey et al (2019), using the quality criteria of partnership and participation, action, reflection, and significance, outlined by Bradbury Huang (2010) and the Journal's criteria for quality (http://journals.sagepub.com/pb-assets/cmscontent/ARJ/ARJ_Quality_ Criteria.pdf), the results of this study can be reviewed in terms of the quality of this CAP's developmental phase.…”
