Student research skills are important in the development of scientific research. This study's purpose was to reveal students' research skills as measured by five indicators and ten sub-indicators of different genders. This research is a pre-experiment using a one-shot case study design. The treatment was given to an experimental class of 12 students in the biology education study program at Universitas Samawa, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The instrument uses a research skills assessment sheet consisting of five indicators and ten sub-indicators. The assessment of each indicator uses a scale of 1 to 4 and then is classified into four criteria, namely 3 < Score ≤ 4 (very good), 2 < Score 3 (good), 1 < Score 2 (good enough), and Score 1 (less good). The results showed that the student's ability to develop research questions was in a good category, with a score of 3.79. In addition, students' research abilities on four other indicators, such as I2, I3, I4, and I5, are in a good category, with scores of 2.67 to 2.83. Overall, students' research abilities on all research indicators did not differ significantly between males and females. However, there were differences in the scores for each indicator regarding gender.

Learning media is one of important parts of the educational process. Direct learning with rats has the potential to have a high risk of student health. Through the learning media for rat preservation, students can understand the learning objectives of mouse identification. Rat preservation is one of the learning media in the Department of Environmental Health, Poltekkes Kemenkes Yogyakarta. The media was used for practical of rats identification as a part of vector controlling subjects. This research aims to develop rat preserved media that could be used as a support for practical activities on vector control for the identification process. The rat media was developed in the form of learning material through defining, designing and development stages. Afterwards it was tested by validity test and the attractiveness. The test of attractiveness was done by taxidermy experts, lecturers, and a group of 30 students who had taken vector control courses. The data obtained through questionnaires and focus group discussions (FGD). The results of the data obtained were then analyzed descriptively and analytically. The research results were reviewed from the aspects of quality, durability, the similarity in shape, and similarity in color. Expert judgment results regarding the aspects of quality, durability, the similarity of shape, and similarity of color were categorized as valid by the taxidermy experts, practitioners, and lecturers. According to the students, 99.6% respondents agreed that the media was suitable as a learning media for mouse identification. The use of rats media can be safety for use as learning media for vector control subjectsjob risk, rats media, safety and health, taxidermy experts, vector controlling subjects.

This research aims at (1) describing students' environmental knowledge based on local potency in West Nusa Tenggara Province, (2) analyzing students' environmental knowledge in terms of gender, and (3) analyzing students' environmental knowledge in term of level or grade. This survey research is analyzed descriptively and inferentially using t test. The subjects consisted of 431 Senior High School students around West Nusa Tenggara Province. The research instrument uses questionnaire consisting of 5 positive and negative statements with 4 scales namely Strongly Agree (SS), Agree (S), Disagree (TS), and Strongly Disagree (STS). The results showed that (1) there were 27.3% of students who had environmental knowledge in the low category, 40.6% sufficient category and 32% high category, (2) there was a different value of environmental care between male and female students (Sig<.05) in the mean score of 70.21 and 66 respectively; and (3) there was a different in the environmental care scores of students in grades 10 and 11 (Sig<.01) in the average of 73.09 and 64.45. Thus, the findings indicate the importance of introducing local potency based on environmental insights to increase students' environmental knowledge.
