Designing an accommodation strategy: findings from an architecture school

Abstract: Purpose This study aims to explore the need for space (demand) and the provision thereof (supply) in the Faculty of Architecture building at Thammasat University Rangsit campus using variables from the designing an accommodation strategy (DAS) framework; these variables are incorporated to test and improve the framework. Another purpose is to examine the planning and development of the faculty building to understand its strategy, which serves as a means to contribute to the planning and development theory. “…In general, papers found for the architectural sector can be divided into categories of indoor space, outdoor space, and architectural education. For indoor spaces, research papers tend to focus on social distancing and air quality [79,109,113,114,116,117,123,126,133]. Social distancing was considered as one of the primary aims to consider when designing a new space.…”

“…The study emphasizes the need to formulate design strategies and guidelines that consider the personalized needs and psychological wellbeing of tenants. Riratanaphong (2021) used case study and a designing accommodation strategy (DAS) framework in the COVID-19 pandemic in Thailand. Their study showed the implementation of temporal measures such as social distancing, and the arrangement of health-related building systems such as automatic hand sanitizer dispensers and thermal scanners with face recognition, arrangements of spaces, and cleanliness at the stairs, elevators and restrooms were provided in facilities.…”

“…The spread of COVID-19 has stimulated a condition branded by isolation, human detachment and social engagement across the virtual world. This is tied with an emphasis on working from home, which has been established as a new norm to minimize the spread of COVID-19 (Riratanaphong, 2021). While many are addressing interrelated health challenges for a post-COVID-19 pandemic, adverse consequences emerge, especially where many people around the world continue to work and live in restricted spaces groups, university students appear to be a catalyst for emerging studies (Peters and Halleran, 2020;Bakio glu et al, 2021;Fofana et al, 2020;Sehgal, 2022).…”
