Designing a Low-Cost System to Monitor the Structural Behavior of Street Lighting Poles in Smart Cities

Antonino Quattrocchi,
Francesco Martella,
Valeria Lukaj
et al.

Abstract: The structural collapse of a street lighting pole represents an aspect that is often underestimated and unpredictable, but of relevant importance for the safety of people and things. These events are complex to evaluate since several sources of damage are involved. In addition, traditional inspection methods are ineffective, do not correctly quantify the residual life of poles, and are inefficient, requiring enormous costs associated with the vastness of elements to be investigated. An advantageous alternative… Show more

“…Acoustic diffusion theory is an extension of Fick's law, namely, (1) where J represents the energy flux, r and t represent the position vector and time, respectively, D represents the diffusion coefficient, and grad(đťś”(r,t)) represents the gradient of the energy density đťś”. The classical form of the acoustic diffusion equation is:…”

“…With research on smart cities increasing in recent years [ 1 ], the development and management of underground spaces have become increasingly strategic [ 2 , 3 ]. The characterization of various physical fields in underground space has attracted increasing attention to the careful management of underground space.…”

“…Worldwide electricity usage is reaching substantial levels and is growing by nearly 3% annually. Outdoor illumination contributes to 15-19% of global power consumption, while lighting consumes roughly 2.4% of humanity's yearly energy resources, resulting in 5-6% of greenhouse gas discharges into the air [6,7]. Roughly 66% of public lighting systems depend on outdated and inefficient technologies, leading to excessive energy use.…”
