Current research applies an energy-based design model to improve performance in existing modern buildings, in Rio de Janeiro, from the 1940’s, improving these buildings’ shading systems. This article proposes a methodology tested through a case study, the Nova Cintra building. The methodology starts by analysing the original shading system performance, regarding insolation, illuminance and air temperature. Using these results, proposes two computacional methods to improve performance: (1) a combinatorial modelling process, recombining the existing shading systems positions in the building’s north façade; and (2) a transformation process, using parametric and algorithmic–parametric modelling, to improve the existing shading systems performance. Both processes use optimization algorithms. The results of these modelling and optimization methods are compared with the results of the original system and suggests an improvement between 111.1% and 590.4% for insolation; between 360.9% and 84.4% for illuminance; and between 2.9% and 3.0% for air temperature, considering winter and summer solstices. This improvement aims at reducing the buildings’ energy consumption and foresees the production of renewable energy from solar harvesting, to mitigate climate change.

The buildings' sector accounts for a large share of energy consumption on a global scale. This scenario generates the need to design and construct more efficient buildings and also requires new policies and incentives. The greatest opportunities for integrating energy efficiency strategies in construction occur at the design stage, in which decisions that will have significant impacts on the building's life cycle are taken. Therefore, the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) is considered, as well as parametric design: new design technologies that allow the analysis of multiple scenarios to support the decisions during the design stage. The purpose of this study is to provide, through a literature analysis, an overview about practical applications of BIM and parametric design for buildings' energy efficiency in a recent research scenario. Studies were categorized according to their main approach and the main software used. In addition, benefits provided by the use of the technologies adopted were highlighted.

The floor plan is a key part of architectural design and has the characteristics of multi-objective evaluation. Traditional methods are often laborious and may lead to re-work due to optimisation, which affects efficiency. Related research uses various algorithms to generate floor plans to improve efficiency. Based on the leading role of architects on floor plans, this paper proposes a generative design method that combines the design process. It takes the space shape as the starting point, simplifies the design process into a mathematical model, and uses Rhino and Grasshopper to complete the algorithm development. Using different algorithm combinations, a large number of new layouts can be explored, and building layouts can be adjusted freely through data optimisation without having to redesign. The design evolution of floor plans of different cases shows that such a generative design method is feasible, reusable, and more efficient than traditional methods.
