Design to automation continuum for industrial processes: ISO 15926 – IEC 61131 versus an industrial case

Abstract: Modern industrial processes have grown to be increasingly complex and their development is under tighter time and resource constraints. During the design lifecycle, the handover between process design and automation engineering is a critical step. This paper presents a standards-driven method for supporting the design to automation continuum. The source data format is ISO 15926 Proteus XML. Automation software describing control loops, alarms and interlocks are added as generic attributes in the Instrumentatio… Show more

“…This software has various features, namely two-dimensional and three-dimensional visualization images as well as reading dimensions such as length, area, and volume of objects (Titin & Safitri, 2021). AutoCad P&ID software can be used in the ISO 15926 standard with the DEXPI specification extension and XML file format (Papakonstantinou et al, 2019). Therefore, Chemical Engineering at UNSIKA held this training so that it could increase the skills needed for a chemical engineering engineer.…”

“…However, plant design information still often resides in proprietary and tool specific formats. A few exceptions exist, such as the Proteus XML schema for P&ID (Piping & Instrumentation Diagram) diagram exchange, which is supported by several leading P&ID tool vendors [3], and the PCF (Piping Component File) format for 3D isometrics, supported by leading tool vendors such as Hexagon PPM, Autodesk, Alias and PTC Creo. However, these are solutions for exchanging a specific type of diagram between tools of different vendors.…”

“…For example, [9] generate the physical aspect of a digital twin of a process based solely on the 3D information, so control software is not generated and a legacy control system is expected to be integrated as in [10]. [3] generate the cyber aspect of a digital twin, i.e. a control system, based on the 2D information.…”

“…The main process design document that is generally available at a brownfield process plant is a P&ID. Some leading P&ID CAD vendor's tools are able to export P&IDs in a machine readable format according to the standardized Proteus XML schema, but this capability is present only in the most recent tool versions and is thus not applicable to brownfield plants [6,59]. In general, the P&IDs at a brownfield plant are paper documents that have been scanned to pdf-format, so various image recognition techniques are needed to extract information from them [12,48,60,61].…”
