Design Talking: How Design Practitioners Talk About Design Research Methods

Abstract: To support the development of TheDesignExchange — a portal to a comprehensive set of design methods applicable to a range of disciplines — we hosted a series of workshops with design students, educators and practitioners. In this paper, we summarize insights gained from the three practitioner workshops associated with early stage design methods used to: Research, Analyze and Communicate. We contrast the practitioner feedback with insights from previous workshops with design students and educators. We also disc… Show more

“…Business management literature often breaks practices into ‘toolsets, skillsets and mindsets’ (Horth & Vehar 2012); however, ‘skillsets’ imply previous training, which not all activities described here require. Theorists often do not distinguish between low-level activities and ordered collections thereof, calling both ‘methods’ (Stout 2003; Ostergaard & Summers 2009; Roschuni, Agogino & Beckman 2011; Roschuni, Kramer & Agogino 2015). Here, ‘method’ is defined as an ordered collection of activities and/or mindsets; any collection of activities, mindsets and/or methods is generically called a ‘practice’.…”

“…Design method selection can shape outcomes across all phases of the design process, [9][10][11][12], making method selection a crucial aspect of successful design work. Recent scholarship has explored how to best support designers as they select methods, as effective support of designers' design decisions could have a high impact on project outcomes.…”

“…In the expansive discipline of design, a number of process models and methods are human-centred ( 26 – 29 ). Whilst often conflated as “design thinking” ( 30 ), over 300 qualitative and quantitative methods ( 31 ) from ethnographic studies to rapid prototyping are drawn upon for problem-solving, aiming to improve project outcomes through the use of empathic, iterative, speculative, and generative methods. Such an approach to innovation does not always guarantee specific, measurable outcomes ( 29 ).…”
