Design studies and multi-disciplinary assessment of agile and highly swept flying wing configurations

Abstract: This article belongs to a series of publications on the design and assessment of the MULDICON UCAV configuration. MULDICON is a 53° swept flying wing combat aircraft concept, investigated in a common effort between the DLR research project Mephisto and the NATO STO Research Task Group AVT-251. This article focuses on the development of the overall concept starting from its predecessor, the SACCON configuration, and the requirements which had been defined for the MULDICON design task. A second focus is placed o… Show more

“…The results of such simulations can be used as an input of the design and/or sizing of the load-bearing structure of a wing. The publications [11,16,17,26] shed light on how the simulation and geometry generation are typically intertwined in multidisciplinary design analysis and optimization (MDAO) workflows and how they are influenced by a preceding conceptual design phase.…”

“…The highly unsteady and uncertain flow over the surface of the wing for medium to a higher AOA makes the pitching moment coefficient ( C m ) highly nonlinear, fluctuating and discontinuous (Zhang et al , 2005; McParlin et al , 2006; McLain, 2009; Cummings et al , 2010; Schütte et al , 2010; Vicroy Dan et al , 2010; Jentzsch et al , 2016; Williams et al , 2019; Liersch et al , 2020b). The recent studies predict a strong correlation between flow topology and C m .…”
