Design Science Research in Doctoral Projects: An Analysis of Australian Theses

Abstract: Design science research (DSR) has gained popularity with doctoral students. In the information systems (IS) discipline, DSR is distinctive in that it creates knowledge through the design of novel or innovative artifacts and analyzes the artifacts' use or performance. We present an analysis of 40 DSR doctoral theses completed in Australia between 2006-2017. Our purpose is to understand how DSR is applied by the IS community, and one critical source of information is the work of doctoral candidates. How candidat… Show more

“…We identified 74 papers citing Hevner et al [1], 24 referring to Peffers et al [14], and Gregor and Hevner [6] with 16 papers as the only papers that were cited more than ten times. Our analysis corresponds to related research on DSR methods in other contexts [29]. Considering this analysis, the framework and guidelines established by Hevner et al [1] seem best suited as a starting point for accommodating context since most other influential method papers in DSR rely on the hallmark observations stated in this work.…”

“…Besides, this work is a design science research (DSR) (CATER-STEEL; TOLEMAN; RAJAEIAN, 2019), motivated by requirements from a company organization. In this manner, we have developed artifacts and evaluated them with a case study and experimental methods, contributing to a knowledge base.…”
