Design, Realization and Measurements of Compact Dual-band CPW-fed Patch Antenna for 2.45/5.80 GHz RFID Applications

Abstract: In this paper, a Coplanar Wave Guide (CPW)-Fed microstrip octagonal patch antenna for RFID Applications is proposed. The studied structure is suitable for 2.45/5.80 GHz applications. The octagonal shape is obtained by making triangular cuts in the four angles of the rectangular microstrip patch antenna; in addition the using of CPW-Fed allows obtaining UWB characteristics in the higher band. The miniaturization in the antenna size for lower band is achieved by introducing an inverted E slot in the radiating el… Show more

“…Many organizations, hospitals, and universities have adopted the RFID technology over other identification technologies such as barcoding, biometric, and other identification technologies due to its low cost, small size, easy maintenance, and the ability to identify objects without requiring light of sight [6,7]. In addition, RFID can be implemented in harsh environments such as dirt and damage, providing the ability of auto-tracking [8]. RFID can identify tags without the need for direct contact where it can identify tags for a specific object within couple feet, tag reusability, and the ability to read multiple tags simultaneously [9,10].…”

“…Therefore, reader antenna is an important unit as they are integral part of RFID systems. Among the applications, ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID) systems receives a lot of attention because of their potential in item-level tagging such as sensitive products tracking, pharmaceutical logistics, transport and medical products (blood, medicines, vaccines), bio-sensing applications, and so on [3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. UHF band has always been the pursuit of RFID systems, because the frequency band varies from country to country.…”

“…The most common are microstrip line excitation [5], [6], coaxial cable [7]- [9], by opening coupling [10], [11] or by proximity coupling [12]. The patch-H antenna is widely used, notably for Bluetooth [13], WLAN [14]- [16], wireless communications [16], [17], or broadband applications [18], [19]. In this work, we have dimensioned a patch-H antenna in the UHF band for RFID applications.…”
