Design Project Planning Method With Task Option Model and Two-Level Multi-Objective Optimization

Abstract: This paper proposes a new optimization-based project planning method that aims at a Pareto-optimal of the potential product performance of designed product and a project failure risk. A task option model is introduced for risk assessment of option-based project management. As its planning includes a number of various design variables and various evaluation indices, in order to solve such a complicated problem with a reasonable computation cost, this research separates the optimization problem into two phases, … Show more

“…Initially, one must consider two of the major issues that surround the design process, it is both complex and uncertain. The design process is inherently uncertain (Chalupnik et al, 2009;Dong et al, 2014;Eckert and Clarkson, 2010;Pich et al, 2002); a form of unpredictable problem-solving (Jonassen, 2000) and it is therefore critical that one appreciates the influence uncertainty has over the design process. It is only by doing so, that one can plan product deigns projects, which includes estimating their design effort needs.…”

“…This is, in part, due to companies not analysing the cause of such problems in the planning process, leading to the resentment and blame of the project manager for a plan's lack of success (Eckert and Clarkson, 2010). It is clear that no two design projects the same, and also that the design process itself is inherently uncertain (Dong et al, 2014;Eckert and Clarkson, 2010;Pich et al, 2002), therefore the challenge in estimating design effort to complete a project is a particularly difficult one (Salam and Bhuiyan, 2016).…”
