Design Parameters of Brush Seals and Their Impact on Seal Performance

Abstract: Brush seals, which were originally designed for gas turbine applications, have been successfully applied to large-scale steam turbines within the past decade. From gas turbine applications, the fundamental behavior and designing levers are known. However, the application of brush seals to a steam turbine is still a challenge. This challenge is mainly due to the extreme load on the brush seal while operating under steam. Furthermore, it is difficult to test brush seals under realistic conditions, i.e. under liv… Show more

“…For each investigation, 24 reproducible circumferential positions can be examined. The investigations are conducted using up to three different non-rotating disks with a diameter equivalent to the shafts diameter of the hot steam test rig, as described in detail in (Schwarz et al, 2012(Schwarz et al, , 2014. As depicted in Figure 2, an optical access allows the evaluations of the blow down and the axial behaviour.…”

“…Two major types of brush seals exist in the commercial brush seal industry, the clamped type, where the bristles are held with a clamping device, 24 and the welded type, wherein the bristles are connected via welding. Although the absence of the welding procedure gives some advantages, the clamping type introduces additional design complexity called axial inclination angle.…”
