Design-Oriented Analysis and Performance Evaluation of a Low-Cost High-Brightness LED Driver Based on Flyback Power Factor Corrector

Abstract: Abstract-This paper presents a new control strategy for power factor correctors (PFCs) used to drive high-brightness lightemitting diodes (HB-LEDs). This control strategy is extremely simple and is based on the use of standard peak-current-mode integrated controllers (PCMICs), reducing its cost and complexity in comparison to traditional PFC controllers. In fact, this method is an alternative implementation of the one-cycle control to PFCs belonging to the flyback family of converters, without introducing high… Show more

“…For example, if the duty cycle increases, the output voltage increases and the bus voltage decreases in the same amount. The sum of both voltages does not depend on the duty cycle, being only proportional to the line peak voltage, as given by the following equation (2).…”

“…The main concept of the single-stage ac-dc converter is that the PFC circuit and the high frequency dc-dc converter are simplified by sharing the switches of the PFC circuit and the dc-dc converter to eliminate the switch and control circuit for the PFC circuit. These single-stage ac-dc converters have the advantages of being simple and cost-effective [10,[14][15]. However, the conventional single-stage ac-dc converters still have drawbacks since they require a high capacity dc-link electrolytic capacitor and a boost inductor for the PFC circuit, similar to the two-stage ac-dc converters, and have high voltage stress and high switching loss of the main switch.…”

“…If the primary energy source is the ac line, then some type of ac-dc converter must be placed between the line and the HB-LEDs [3][4][5][6]. Furthermore, it is a well-known fact that the low-frequency harmonic content of the line current must comply with specific regulations (EN 61000-3-2 [7][8][9][10] and the ENERGY STAR® program [10]).…”
