Design of Voltage Controlled Oscillator for X-band Radar Using CSRR loaded microstrip line

Abstract: In this paper, a novel voltage controlled oscillator(VCO) using CSRR loaded microstrip line for X-band RADAR is proposed. Using the microstrip line loaded CSRR inserted between the oscillator and buffer to the filter, the harmonic suppression has been improved. The measured results of the fabricated oscillator shows that its oscillation frequencies are from 9.28 to 9.39GHz according to the tuning voltage 0 ∼ 10V, its output power level are about 16.6dBm at 9.35GHz. In this paper, the open ring type DGS(Defected Ground Structure) resonator, applicable to MMIC(Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit), is proposed to improve phase noise characteristics of RF oscillator. This resonator is planar type, therefore, it easy to design miniaturrized., and takes relatively high Q value. Modeling the equivalent parameter of resonator is needed, when designing the RF oscillator with resonator. The mathematical method to solve the equivalent parameter of the resonator from the measured results of resonator is introduced in this paper. To verify the method, DGS resonator with 5.8 GHz center frequency is fabricated, for measuring characteristics and calculating the equivalent parameter. The result from this process is compared with the data of the ADS simulation, and as a result both were identical.

This study presents a technique for extracting all the extrinsic parameters of HEMTs by minimizing the residual errors between a pinch-off cold-FET's gate and drain pad de-embedded Z-parameters and its modeled Z-parameters calculated by the cold-FET's remaining parameters. The presented technique allows us to successfully extract the remaining extrinsic parameter values as well as the gate and drain pad capacitance value without the additional fabrications of the gate and drain dummy pad.

Evaluations of Three Phase Shift Models in Describing Phase Shift Impulse Train Response of a Simple Planar Oscillator

This study evaluates the modeling accuracy of the existing three phase shift models on which the time domain oscillator phase noise theories are based. For the evaluation, this study investigates how accurately the three models can model the phase shift impulse train response of a simple planar oscillator. Evaluation result reveals that Kaertner model most accurately reflects the oscillator's phase shift impulse train responses for five different impulse train inputs, whereas PP model exhibited the worst performance in modeling the phase shift impulse train responses.
