Design of two-way reversible bending actuator based on a shape memory alloy/shape memory polymer composite

Abstract: The design of a reversible bending actuator based on a SMA/SMP composite is presented. The SMA/SMP composite is made of SMA NiTi wires with a bent ‘U’-shape in the austenite phase embedded in an epoxy SMP matrix which has a memorized flat shape. The bending motion is caused by heating the composite above TAf to activate the NiTi recovery. Upon cooling, the softening from the austenite to R-phase transformation results in a relaxation of the composite towards its original flat shape. In the three-point bending … Show more

“…The development of the SMA-containing SMEP hybrids started with the investigations of laminated beams [178,208,209,210] followed by 2D (shell) [211,212] and 3D structures [213] and devices [178]. These works contributed to clarify open issues with respect of embedding, positioning, content, maximum straining, minimum bending radius, actuation capability-related properties, etc.…”

“…In this case, heating creates unbalanced mechanical stresses arising from different thermal or mechanical properties or from the SME (if SMPs are used). This strategy has also allowed for the development of laminated polymers with double SMP layers exhibiting two-way SME also under stress-free condition [154][155][156]. The main disadvantages of such an approach are related to its preparation that may be sophisticated, and the limited reversible strain change (generally lower that 10%).…”

“…Through this combination, the SMCs was able to exhibit a "three-way actuation" by heating between the respective transformation temperatures of the SMAs and the glass transition of the SMP phase [422,420]. Taya and colleagues [414] have also manufactured an SMA-SMP composite and have reported a significant reversible deflection (1.3mm for a 10mm span specimen) measured via three point bending testing. Thermal management becomes an important issue in these multistable configurations.…”
