Design of Two-Regional Flexible-Route Bus Systems considering Interregional Demands

Abstract: The flexible-route bus system is a type of dynamic public transit service. Routes and timetables are not fixed during the operation process, and driving routes are planned according to passengers’ reservation needs. This study develops a model that considers inter-regional travel demands. The optimal network layout is determined by minimizing an objective function that comprises operator and user costs. Then, two cases with and without loop-line buses are analyzed. In the case of the joint optimal solution, th… Show more

“…It is vitally important to determine operation time and service area when planning and designing a demand-responsive transit service. However, most studies on demand-responsive transit do not pay enough attention to this stage but focus on optimizing routes [10,11], schedules [12,13], etc., under the assumption of ideal spatio-temporal demand distribution.…”

“…For flexible transit, a larger service area may lead to conflicting service efficiency and coverage. On this basis, to balance the relationship between users and operators, Wang et al ( 14 ) used a zoning strategy to design the area effectively. The optimal network layout for regional flexible transit was determined.…”
