The focus of this research work is modelling time dependent swelling strain and pressure simultaneously in weak rock. Various swelling potential under different boundary conditions is considered. Free and semiconfined swelling strain and swelling pressure under oedometric condition are the most proposed tests for determination of the swelling potential of weak rock. In this paper, a modified swelling strain and pressure test is introduced using springs to provide deformable axial stiffness. The swelling strain and pressure of mudrock are modelled by artificial neural network for various swellable clay, carbonate, initial water content and different boundary stiffness, by using a combination of the proposed modified test along with the existing tests. This method correlates the results of laboratory tests with an acceptable accuracy. The proper operation of the developed model for predicting the time dependent swelling strain and pressure of mudrock under deformable and rigid axial boundaries is confirmed.

Since both lining structure and rock mass exhibit delayed behaviour, tunnel equilibrium conditions evolve with time. After discussing existing work done on different aspects of long-term tunnel behaviour, the aim of this paper is to ''understand'' the influence of rock mass and lining degradations on the long-term stability conditions of the tunnel by means of the convergence-confinement method. In order to represent the effects of degradation on tunnel long-term conditions, specific degradation models are selected according to the disorders identified during principal inspections of road tunnels in Switzerland. By simulating the reduction of the mechanical properties of both the rock mass and the lining or by using creep models, it is possible to assess the influence of the main degradation processes on tunnel stability. The results are interpreted in terms of tunnel safety factor. The presented approach for the determination of the long-term behaviour of tunnels, although valid for simple tunnel geometry and field stress conditions, allows to roughly estimate the influence of significant degradation processes that affect the rock mass and the supporting structure. Though this approach results in some simplification, it may be generalised and adopted with more refined numerical analyses for improving the assessment of tunnel long-term conditions.

The swelling phenomenon in tunneling is numerically modelled as a coupled hydraulic-mechanical process. The present communication focuses on the significance of the constitutive seepage flow equations, as well as on the importance of the hydraulic boundary conditions. The observed absence of swelling deformations at the tunnel walls and the crown can be explained as a consequence of varying hydraulic boundary conditions along the excavation boundary. According to the presented numerical results, the non-linearity of the unsaturated flow equations has a decisive qualitative influence on the predicted deformation field.
