Design of Squeeze Film Damper Supports for Rigid Rotors

Abstract: This paper investigates squeeze film bearings supporting a centrally preloaded rigid rotor mounted in antifriction bearings. Assuming the short bearing approximation and isothermal, incompressible lubrication, design data are presented for such a system over a wide range of operating conditions. Design considerations include the possibility of undesirable operation modes, the maximum unbalance for which the squeeze film support is superior to the rigid mount, the transmissibility at design speed and the forces… Show more

“…[5] in which all the basic formulas for hydrodynamic forces have been obtained. It is also necessary to mention the work [6] in which the possibility of the failure mode in operation of a rigid rotor with SFD in supports was first shown. Rip flows in a clearance and operation of a damper with various seals have been studied in works [7][8][9].…”

“…The calculation method used depends on the stage of work on engine designing. At early stages it is recommended to use the simplified calculation method for a rigid rotor described in works [4,6,[10][11][12].…”

“…For squeeze film dampers with retaining springs, much theoretical and experimental work has been done under the assumption of a synchronous and circular rotor motion (White, 1972;Mohan and Hahn, 1974;Feng, 1988;McLean and Hahn, 1983). In this special case, the solution procedure was reduced to the solution of a single nonlinear algebraic equation.…”

“…Squeeze-film dampers are now commonly used to suppress the lateral vibrations due to rotor unbalance. Mohan and Hahn (1974)considered the design of squeeze-film damper supports for rigid rotors. Cookson and Kossa (1979) considered the effectiveness of squeeze-film dampers for rigid rotors without a centralizing spring.…”
