Design of serially concatenated continuous phase modulation with symbol-wise interleaving

Abstract: In this letter we consider serially concatenated continuous phase modulation (SCCPM) schemes with symbolwise interleaving and an additional intra-symbol interleaving. We use extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart to optimize the outer code and intra-symbol interleaver. We show that, for various continuous phase modulation (CPM) parameters, the outer code with memory 2 may not always be the best choice. For CPM with modulation index ℎ = 1/2, considerable improvements can be achieved by moderately increasin… Show more

“…For instance, Li et al [29] studied a bit-interleaving scheme in space-time trellis coding in blockfading channels. Jun et al [30] proposed a serially concatenated continuous phase modulation by adopting symbol-level interleaving. On the other hand, constellation rotation was proposed for increasing the constrained capacity by rotating the constellations of different users with certain angles.…”

“…6 shows the BER performance for SCCPM with bit and symbol interleaver at the same length of information bits. The outer CC is (7,5), CPM is quaternary, 1RC with modulation index 1/ 4 h = . The length of symbol interleaver and bit interleaver is 500 and 1000 respectively.…”

“…Though SCC can greatly improve the power efficiency, the convergence threshold for SCC coded systems is still much higher than the Shannon limit. There are other techniques to improve the convergence threshold of SCC coded systems, such as symbol interleaving [5][6][7], and non-binary outer codes [8]. Furthermore, some other concatenated and iterative decoding schemes, such as irregular repeat accumulate (IRA) codes, show superior performance to SCC in low SNR regions.…”
