Design of Patterned Surfaces with Selective Wetting Using Nanoimprint Lithography

Abstract: The fabrication of flexible surfaces with a combination of ultrahydrophobic and hydrophilic properties at alternating locations by UV NIL is reported. A new method for master fabrication based on nanoimprinting combined with photolithography is described. The master is used for a double replica technique to imprint nanopillars atop microstripes on a plastic substrate. Selective wetting is achieved due to ultrahydrophobic nanopatterned regions with 126° WCA and hydrophilic flat regions with 70° WCA on a single … Show more

“…After removal of the template, the polyaniline nanowires remained attached to the Ti/Si substrate, which enabled the fabrication of superhydrophobic and electrically conductive surfaces [ 163 ]. Bessonov et al presented the fabrication of acrylate-based surfaces with controlled wettability that included alternative superhydrophobic and hydrophilic regions [ 164 ]. Hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions were achieved by UV curing the resin employing a segmented master that contained pieces of AAO templates.…”

“…Compared to the traditional patterning techniques of physical/chemical vapor deposition or sputtering, solution-based deposition approaches are becoming popular for the patterning films creation due to the facile synthesis parameters and conditions, less energy, and time requirement [180,181]. Although the common photolithographic patterning technique is excellent for preparing submicron-sized template in solution, it is a complex multistep process that has to remove great part of the formed film and the supplemental photoresist [182]. Super-wetting/antiwetting pattern with an extreme wettability contrast by photolithography, particularly the rewritable pattern by using high photocatalytic activity of anatase TiO 2 [140][141][142][143][144], is a potentially powerful and economical approach to precisely construct various multifunctional nanostructures in aqueous solution [145][146][147][148][149].…”

“…The wettability of solid surfaces has gained tremendous importance over the past decade in both fundamental science and industrial interests. [1][2][3][4] Conventionally, for a superhydrophobic surface, the effective contact angle (CA) of the liquid droplet with the surface exceeds 150° and the contact angle hysteresis (defi ned as the difference between the advancing and the receding angles) is smaller than 10°. In nature, many biological surfaces such as lotus leaves, [ 5 ] rice leaves, [ 6 ] water-strider legs, [ 7 ] and cicada wings [ 8 ] possess unusual superhydrophobic features.…”
