Design of low-cost wireless noise monitoring sensor unit based on IoT concept

Abstract: The recent expansion of wireless sensor networks (WSN) in urban cities has led to possibility of generation of large amounts of information data from the environmental monitoring systems among which one of the most concerning is the excessive urban noise pollution. As opposed to the conventional noise mapping procedures that involve costly and time-consuming measurement process with a traditional high-priced noise level meter, the low-cost wireless sensor networks provide a method for achieving data collection… Show more

“…The demand of environmental quality is ever-increasing with the improvement of city residents living standard, especially a quiet and comfortable environment for living and study has already a basic requirement of people. However, with the fast-developing economy, the pollution of industrial noise, traffic noise, construction noise and social activity noise is increasing seriously which has a significant impact on human life and health [1][2] . To meet the needs of people, several affirmative measures are taken by relevant government departments to strengthen the prevention of noise pollution, and monitoring departments are required to collect accurate and true noise monitoring data.…”

“…On the other hand, noise control traditional methods in urban areas are mainly used by professionals who register and analyze noise data in places of interest using a port-able sonometer; however, this method is not an answer to constant measuring since measuring devices are costly apart from having significantly accurate noise maps [6] Diverse strategies based on the Internet of Things (IoT) have been suggested in re-cent years, offering low-cost alternatives for constant monitoring with the possibility of data storage captured in real-time, helping in decision-making processing. [7] [6] [8].…”

“…Some IoT devices can measure the concentration of different gases such as CO 2 , CO, NO 2 present in the air as well as temperature, humidity and send it to the distant servers [6]. Sound level and noise in smart cities can be measured using some autonomous devices as well [7]. Besides air and sound quality almost all kinds of environmental variables are being measured and analysed using IoT based systems.…”
