Design of Interoperable Communication Architecture for TSO-DSO Data Exchange

Abstract: This paper describes a model driven methodology in order to implement an interoperable communication architecture supporting TSO-DSO information exchange. The model driven methodology goes through Smart Grid Architecture Model interoperability layers and leverage international standards. The Use Case approach is utilized for identification of information exchange requirements, which are materialized through Business Objects gap analysis against existing standardized IEC CIM (Common Information Model) profiles.… Show more

“…It is important to note that the proposed use case methodology does not explicitly state how information is modeled or which protocols should be adopted. However, the methodology that was developed in the TDX-ASSIST project has demonstrated novel approaches to information modeling such as common information model (CIM) Radi et al (2019) as well as novel platforms for information and data exchange such as ENTSO-E ECCo SP, transparency platform (TP), and different cloud computing services (Suljanović et al, 2019).…”

“…In particular, information and data exchange via cloud computing platforms is considered a key research area for future smart grids (Radi et al, 2019;Suljanović et al, 2019;Taylor et al, 2019). In this study, the use of DSO-connected resources for balancing purposes in the market environment is proposed.…”

“…This paper contributes to the analysis of the information exchange with a detailed study of coordinated voltage control. In [6], it is proposed to use a model driven methodology to identify how to exchange information between TSO and DSO, with the Smart Grid Architecture Model (SGAM) framework as basis. A common model of business and system roles and a common ontology should be used to identify the information that needs to be exchanged.…”

“…In [7], a model based approach with a domain analysis of DSOs is used to derive the requirements on CIM profile and middleware for DSO applications. Both [5] and [6] point out that design principles and solutions developed for the Internet of Things (IoT) are beneficial to apply also for smart grids. For example, an evolution from traditional clientserver models towards a publish-subscribe principle, which is more centered on the information to exchange than the communicating devices, can be advantageous also for smart grid.…”

“…The actions taken by one operator can significantly affect other system operators and is a growing concern. The replacement of traditional generation methods with renewable energy sources at transmission and distribution has reduced the overall system control over generation [5].…”
