Designing, developing, and maintaining control software is often a complex and difficult task, especially in larger projects. The paper presents a concept of applying the ModelDriven Development approach with SysML modeling to the IEC 61131-3 development process. Four types of diagrams are used to model different aspects of the system: Requirements Diagram, Package Diagram, Block Definition Diagram, and State Machine Diagram. The models represent POUs and their requirements, resources, and tasks. Some POUs can be modeled as state machines as well. The SysML diagrams can be used to generate code templates for the implementation in IEC 61131-3 languages, such as ST or FBD. The paper also describes an extension to the CPDev engineering environment, which integrates the proposed SysML modeling with programming and execution of IEC 61131-3 software. The example of an engine and pump control system is presented to show various stages of the proposed approach.

Model Driven Development (MDD) has been proved as a quite successful paradigm in general-purpose computing and is currently exploited in the embedded systems domain. On the other hand, the majority of industrial automation systems is developed based on the IEC 61131 standard. This standard defines a model and a set of programming languages for the development of industrial automation software and it is supported by the majority of the commercial tools in this domain. This work proposes an MDD process to increase the productivity and reliability of the development process of industrial automation systems. Piping and instrumentation diagrams are considered as source of requirements for process control engineering and SysML is used to reduce the gap between these diagrams and the 61131 based design specs of the control system. The foundation for a SysML profile to facilitate the exploitation of SysML in this domain is described. This profile will allow the developer to work in higher layers of abstraction than the one supported by IEC 61131 and effectively move from requirement specifications into the implementation model of the system.

The growing complexity of industrial automation demands the adoption of software engineering principles for improving the development process of control systems. This paper presents a methodological approach to the design and development of complex automation systems relying on modeldriven engineering (MDE). A benefit of this approach is the integration of methods and techniques widespread within the automation discipline with modern MDE techniques guiding the designer through the development phases. A second advantage is to add flexibility enough to adapt the steps to the needs of the system under design. Finally, the architecture presented is prepared to be adapted to methodology extensions to cover other aspects of automation systems. The framework is based on domain models that are defined through the development phases using the terminology of the automation field. Using model transformations both documentation about system analysis and design and the skeleton of software units are automatically generated. A proof-of-concept tool has been developed that has been tested on the design of medium-complexity projects to assess the impact of its use with respect to project documentation and maintenance.Note to Practitioners-Control software development can be considered one of the challenges in automation field for achieving leadership in the future economic market.
