Design of human-map system interaction

Abstract: In this work-in-progress we present some ideas and findings involving map design and human performance. Satellites has once and for all automated geographic positioning and resulted in a plethora of map applications, not only in professional transportation but also in the private sphere, in cars and even for street use in mobile phones. But many people have problems using the traditional bird's-eye view maps. The maze experiment presented here show that an egocentric ("out of the window") view of the map resul… Show more

“…We plan to explore interactions with displays that provide egocentric maps, as such maps have been shown to improve user performance on navigation tasks [16], as well as augmented reality navigation aids. We are also exploring building predictive models of when users are likely to look at the PND display for reassurance.…”

“…The geographic statistical analysis is to assist management decision-making and conduct data analysis. 2D statistical analysis visualization is overlapped with a white background on 3D virtual reality environment, since it's more intuitive and a cognitively less demanding display system, which lessens the cognitive workload of the user [18]. The innovations this work include, real-time dynamic comprehensive transportation data mining, 3D GIS analysis and release as for transportation junction; comprehensive assessment on service scope of junction by analyzing the long-term dynamic traffic data; comprehensive analysis on actual travel time and then comprehensive assessment on service capacity of public transportation (accessibility and reliability).…”

“…They also report that users reacted positively to the idea of controlling scrolling with tilt, preferring it to button based alternatives. Finally, Poupyrev et al [17] describe a study of tilt based scrolling in a list. Two conditions are compared, one featuring vibrotactile feedback on the transition between list items, the other without such feedback.…”
