The current study presents experiments for the initial stages of fluidization induced by a localized fluid injection. The process was studied by recording high-speed videos in a 2-D-region far from the boundaries using Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence and Refractive Index Matching. The experimental setup allowed for several parameters to be systematically studied including particle sizes, initial bed heights, and injection port diameters. The results show that the critical flow rate required for fluidization is primarily dependent on the initial height of the granular bed. However, this dependence is not a linear relation but progressively plateaus for larger heights. Conversely, the diameter of the chimney relates only slightly to the injection port diameter and significantly more to the diameter of the particles. Unlike for the bounded domain, the minimum fluidization velocity of the unbounded fluidization domain has not been well developed. The aimed of the research is to formulate the minimum jet (holes) velocity (voc) theoretically and experimentally as the criteria for unbounded domain fluidization. Physical experiments were conducted for bounded and unbounded fluidizations of 20 cm to 45 cm thickness of sand bed. The bounded fluidization was carried out using a transparent vertical tube, whilst the unbounded fluidization was conducted on a transparent box. The fluidization discharge and pressure were measured. Empirical equations on jet holes velocity based on the experiment was developed. It was found that voc depends on the required superficial velocity at the surface of sediment deposit (vc) and flow rate loose factor () due to unbounded domain conditions. The vc is greater than the minimum fluidization velocity in bounded domain (vmf). The conservative values of velocity conversion factor (ks) were found to be approximately 2.0.

This paper reports on a preliminary study carried out to investigate the effect of soil, and particularly fluidisation of soil, around leaking water pipes. During the study a bed of particles is fluidised at controlled flow rates, using upward-pointing orifices to simulate holes in a pipe. The extent of the fluidised zone and the head drop within the bed are monitored. The results show that significant head can be sustained in a shallow pipe without the fluidised zone breaking through the bed surface. Head loss from a leaking pipe is divided into three components: through the orifice; in the fluidised/mobile bed zones; and through the static soil. The results show the extent of fluidised and mobile zones appears to be almost independent of the orifice size. Most of the head loss is found to occur within fluidised and mobile zones; significant (but lower) head loss is found to occur through the orifice and only a small fraction of the total losses occurs in the static soil.
