Design of fixed frequency controlled radial-mode stacked disk-type piezoelectric transformers for DC/DC converter applications

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a new design procedure to determine the optimal size of a piezoelectric transformer (PT) for DC/DC converter applications. We examined several parameters, which allows us to produce a piezoelectric transformer with optimal efficiency and which has an optimal range for regulating voltage. The characteristics of a piezoelectric transformer (PT) are well known when the load impedance is a pure resistor. However, when piezoelectric transformers are used in AC/DC or DC/DC converter applica… Show more

“…It should be noted that the inductor is not necessary but adding it enlarges the range of zero voltage switching (ZVS) condition and rejects common mode noise [7]. Since the variable frequency methods haven't a sufficient control bandwidth for wide range load variations, the constant switching frequency has become a matter of interest in the previous researches [8]. Similarly, as for other resonant converters, the duty cycle variation may move the resonant conditions and the soft switching condition, which causes the efficiency of the converter to decrease.…”

“…Y.P. Liu proposed a design method of PT in a DC/DC converter based on analyze of the vibration velocity [18][19][20]. By examining the constraints of the maximum mechanical current and the energy balance this method provides the dimensional dimension of the PT for a wide range of the load.…”

“…In other hand, to avoid an overdesign of power converters due to the switching losses a zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) technique can be introduced [21]. But, to achieve the ZVS condition, a bulky inductor or an inductive matching network is typically required in the driving circuit [22]. However, the added magnetic component sacrifices the size and the weight of the converter.…”
