A new type composite dowel shear connector was proposed by introducing folded angles in the steel dowels. Four push-out specimens and two composite beam specimens were designed and experimentally studied. The structural behavior and failure mechanism of the composite folded dowel shear connection were investigated. The concrete failure was observed in both push-out and flexural tests, and the folded steel dowels were capable of yielding development. It is found that the bearing capacity and shear stiffness of the specimens with denser spacing dowels were higher than that of specimens with sparser dowels, but the ductility and deformation performance of the specimens with denser spacing dowels were lower than those with sparser dowels. By means of the finite element model simulation, the influence of strength and thickness of concrete slab, strength, thickness and folded angle of steel dowel on the mechanical properties of folded dowel shear connection were analysed. The folded angle could be determined as 20° because of the larger actual effective shear area and bearing capacity. Based on the bearing capacity analysis in terms of the three likely failure modes, such as steel failure, concrete shear failure and concrete pry-out, calculation formula of the shear bearing capacity of the folded dowel shear connection was put forward and verified. The calculated results by the proposed formula were in good agreement with the test results. For the composite beams, the calculated bending moments derived from the transformed section and the plasticity section methods were also in good agreement with the test values. It is suggested that the shear connection degree should be greater than 1 to enable a full composite beam.

A new form of shear connection, so‐called composite dowels, first appeared in Europe in last decade. It enabled economic construction of steel‐concrete composite bridges without an upper steel flange, using a direct connection between steel web and concrete slab. It finally resulted in new economic structural forms and composite sections that had not been used in bridge engineering before. In 2010 the European Commission launched an international project to build three different innovative bridges in three different European countries (Germany, Poland, Romania). Each bridge project was supported by a national consortium consisting of design office, general contractor and university. This economic technology has developed fast: by the end of 2016, at least 34 bridges using composite dowels had been constructed in Europe (13 in Germany, 11 in Poland, 4 in Czech Republic, 4 in Austria, 2 in Romania). These structures use different kinds of composite section that in many cases are not covered by standard design procedures for composite structures. The need for a consistent design method was evident. This leads to a clear design concept that covers the contribution of concrete slabs in transmitting part of the vertical force in composite sections and finally breaks with the concept of a ”steel skeleton“ constituting the fundamental part of the composite beam. The approach proposed here needs to be as simple and clear as possible, so it assumes some simplifications at this stage. It is intended to cover many types of composite section, externally reinforced section and conventional composite section.

In steel‐concrete composite structures, innovative composite dowels can be used for the connection of ultra‐high‐performance concrete (UHPC) slabs and high‐strength steel members. In addition to sufficient shear capacity, composite dowels have to ensure the transmission of tensile forces in the composite connection in order to prevent lifting of the concrete slab. This may lead to structural problems, particularly in the very slender concrete slabs of high‐strength composite beams, where composite dowels have very small embedment depths. Although findings concerning the structural anchorage behaviour of composite dowels under static loads are already available, studies on the fatigue of composite dowels under cyclic pull‐out loading are still lacking. As fatigue behaviour is crucial for applications in bridge construction, the present paper introduces cyclic pull‐out tests on composite dowels in UHPC slabs in which the influence of different load‐dependent parameters (upper load level and load range) as well as the use of transverse reinforcement has been investigated. Furthermore, an approach to assess the lifetime of composite dowels in UHPC under cyclic pull‐out loading is proposed.
