Design of an Open Smart Energy Gateway for Smart Meter Data Management

Abstract: Executive SummaryWith the widespread deployment of electronic interval meters, commonly known as smart meters, came the promise of real-time data on electric energy consumption. Recognizing an opportunity to provide consumers access to their near real-time energy consumption data directly from their installed smart meter, we designed a mechanism for capturing those data for consumer use via an open smart energy gateway (OpenSEG). By design, OpenSEG provides a clearly defined boundary for equipment and data own… Show more

“…However, smart meters are capable of providing 10-second data to an SEP device, and these data can be ported over to an aggregator. Research is under way to evaluate how these data can be aggregated and used to meet ISO ancillary services requirements (Page et al 2015). This research platform, known as an open smart energy gateway (OpenSEG) links to the smart meter.…”

“…It stored 48 h of current consumption data in a circular cache in XML format and automated data transfer to the utility. The designed system was used for homes, residential areas and commercial buildings in California (Page et al , 2015). The data processing method defined in Fowler et al (2015) was envisioned for daily, monthly or annual consumption analysis and load profiles generation.…”

“…Smart meters are capable of providing 10-second data to an SEP device, and these data can be ported over to an aggregator. The Open smart energy gateway (OpenSEG), linking to the smart meter, is an open-source data platform designed to work with ZigBee SEP 1.x to provide consumers with access to the most recent 48 hours of their data (Page et al 2015). Data are stored locally in a circular cache.…”
