In recent years, due to substantial evolution in the field of consumer electronics, the society is striving to optimize efficiency, energy savings, green technology and environmental sustainability in their daily lives at homes. Most of the people are controlling and monitoring home appliances manually and therefore, facing lots of problems in managing natural resources, cost, effort and security which lead towards an uncomfortable and unreliable life. Numerous 'intelligent' devices such as smartphones, tablets, air-conditioners, etc. have promoted the key concept of the Internet of Things (IoT) based home automation. Entrenched with technology, these devices can be distantly monitored and controlled over the Internet at home and anywhere in the world. Over the past few decades, global warming has become a severe worldwide challenge. However, sustainable development and green technology play an important role in climate change. The primary purpose of this study is to save natural resources, reduce energy consumption, and to understand the impact of home automation on the society in order to achieve the goal of green technology and environmental sustainability. In this paper, IoT based home automation approach integrated with the smart meter, solar, wind, geothermal renewable energy resources and government green awareness program to extensively optimize the need of energy consumption, security, cost, convenience and cleaner environment for the society is proposed. In addition, a survey was conducted among the target audience for the purpose of identifying and evaluating its least impact on the environment and society in a sustainable development perspective. The results of this survey are statistically analyzed using IBM SPSS statistics version 23. The results revealed that there is a significant impact of home automation on the society thereby contributing to its solution.

Infrared (IR) technology is still prominent in modern day although an argument can be made of its lack of importance given the availability of more secure and less hazardous means of control in modern day. Nevertheless, it still possesses applications in modern day control systems. Older model infrared appliances cannot benefit from modern day speech control as they do not possess an interface to receive and process speech input and do not have the ability to connect to a local area or wireless network to fully benefit from this technology. A prototype model was adopted with limited functionalities, in order to enable quick implementation and facilitate the analysis of the working of the project. Also, some programming languages such as Arduino, JAVA and MIT App Inventor were adopted to enable for proper interfacing with some hardware components such as Arduino Nano, Bluetooth Module (HC-05) and IR Transmitter. The result of the study showed a control system providing support for older model infrared appliances. Also, a good environment for installation and adequate maintenance practices is demand for optimum workability. In conclusion, the system is user-friendly and requires little to no orientation to understand its workings as the intended appliance is supported.

In this era of digitization and automation, Internet of things (IoT) provides a platform that allows devices to be connected, sensed and controlled remotely across a network infrastructure. As an organization grows every year, new management problems and energy issues appear. Monitoring and controlling the unused devices that consume power during human absence is a major inability. In addition to this, coordinating the people participating in the daily activities of the laboratory is tedious when population of the usage of space out numbers a manageable threshold. This work targets to develop a smart laboratory system based on IoT and mobile application technologies to monitor the overall activities of the lab including energy consumption and utilization of devices, thereby providing a smart environment to the campus with enhanced security, energy efficiency and comfort. The aim is to control and monitor the things such as lights, fans, projector and air-conditioner of IoT lab in CIT campus using Google assistant or chat bot. The instigation of Google assistant not only provides a user-friendly access to the things but also makes the process interactive with its response. The use of voice commands overcomes the mundane task of switching the appliances. The status and energy consumption of the devices were viewed on a dashboard which is available in the website (www.citeceiot.in/dashboard/graph.php). From the results of implementation, it is observed that the appliances in the lab were remotely monitored and controlled thereby reducing power consumed and human energy considerably.
