Design of an Adaptive Communication System for Implementation on Board a Future Algerian LEO Satellite

Abstract: Understanding of the physical communications environment from low Earth orbits is the key to the successful implementation of the communications system. This already complex environment is further complicated by the constraints of the microsatellite platform. The small, low mass platform offers limited downlink power and a small antenna envelope and ground plane. This affects the performance of both uplink and downlink in the fading LEO environment. The 'little LEO' satellite systems must be designed to operat… Show more

“…2 The satellite channel model varies from different environments, which is beyond the scope of this paper. We just simplify it to be Rayleigh fading the same as some other literature, e.g., [52,53] concerning low earth orbit (LEO) satellite communications. 3 The superscript of † is used to specify corresponding notations for this scheme.…”

“…An ACM system for a future Algerian LEO microsatellite was designed using QAM modulation schemes and Rayleigh and Ricean channel models [12]. However, the study did not address how to measure the channel quality heuristics on-board the satellite.…”

“…LA is used in a variety of terrestrial applications such as WiFi, land mobile communications, and cellular systems [3][4][5][6][7][8]. LA has also been used in satellite communications applications [9][10][11][12], evaluating the performance of an adaptive modulation system in the unique space-based propagation environment. However, these applications either present LA in a broadcasting system with no direct feedback to the ground station or do not consider shadowing effects.…”
