Design of a Wind Sensor Based on Cylinder Diametrical Pressure Differences for Boundary Layer Meteorological Observation

Abstract: Wind speed and direction are important parameters in meteorological observation. Solid wind sensor has needed with small Quadcopter for boundary layer meteorological observation. In this paper the principle of a cylindrical two-dimensional wind sensor is reported by analyzing the data from wind tunnel experiments. A model is proposed to describe the distribution of the pressure difference across a diameter of a cylinder and the wind sensor is fabricated with MEMS differential pressure sensors. In wind tunnel t… Show more

“…For these largescale measurements, instruments with large geometries were used. However, the development of miniaturized measuring instruments and their extension to several other applications, such as airflow measurements of drones [1], [2], indoor environments [3], [4], and biologging [5]- [7], is growing in recent years. Furthermore, low-wind-speed information is also important in these fields.…”

“…The measurement method converts the DPs among multiple inlets on the surface of the sensor structure to wind speed and direction [20]- [25]. Although miniaturizing the housing is considered difficult because of its complex shape, a compact sensor has been realized by placing a thermo-sensitive element inside the housing [1], [2], [4], [19], [26], [27]. Since then, various DP airflow sensors have been developed for various applications.…”
