The valorisation of sewage sludge for sustainable agricultural use and biofuel production proposes an effective and beneficial management of sewage sludge in a closed-loop cycle. The management of sewage sludge biowaste is a rising problem due to increasing waste storage expenses. In this sense, the use of circular economy principles in sewage sludge management creates opportunities to develop new technologies for processing. The biorefinery model allows the application of wasteless technologies via sewage sludge valorisation in terms of agricultural use and biofuel production, especially with the hydrothermal carbonisation method. Applying hydrothermal carbonisation in the treatment of biosolid sewage sludge has numerous benefits due to processing highly hydrated organic waste into carbon hydro char, a high-quality solid biofuel. The direct use of sewage sludge in the soil does not allow for full use of its functional properties. However, the hydrothermal carbonisation of sewage sludge results in biocarbon pellets, making it a viable approach. This work also discusses the barriers (legal, chemical, biological, and technical) and possibilities related to sewage sludge biorefining processes.

The reuse of energy is a topic currently being widely discussed around the world. This study analyzes the potential for energy reuse in treatment plants. Sewage Treatment Plants are responsible for treating the water present in the sewers of cities. The treated water returns clean to the river, and generally, the place of discharge has a high height and flow rate that can be harnessed for the generation of electric energy. This work investigates the feasibility of installing a Micro Hydroelectric Plant in the Treatment Station of the Uberaba River in Brazil. Hydraulic potential and investment analysis were used as viability criteria. For the study, a height of 6 m and an average flow rate of 0.465 m3/s were considered, which could generate about 22.51 kW using a Bulb water turbine. This power represents a return of US$1651.26 per month from the generation of electric energy. The estimated installation cost was US$32,966.73, and the payback period was found to be less than 2 years. There are 702 sewage treatment plants in Brazil alone, and hypothetical analyses were performed with flow rates ranging from 0.2 to 1 m3/s and heights ranging from 1 to 9 m. Motivating results with payback periods of less than 4 years were obtained for numerous hypothetical situations, which demonstrates the feasibility of installing Micro Hydropower Plants and achieving savings in the sewage treatment system.

Enhancing Mesophilic Anaerobic Digestion of Waste-Activated Sludge through Heat Pretreatment and Kinetic Modeling

Sewage sludge is a useful raw material for the production of renewable energy due to its stable annual output. In this study, the enhancement of mesophilic anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge through heat pretreatment at 95 °C for 30 min was tested in an anaerobic moving bed biofilm reactor (hAMBBR). The sludge retention time was set at 20, 15, 10, and 5 days during 300 days of operation and compared to a traditional anaerobic continuous stirred tank reactor (AnCSTR) without pretreatment. Results of this research indicate that the digestion ratio of volatile soluble solids in the hAMBBR process could be improved by 50%, and the average conversion ratio of methane could be increased by 45%. When the sludge retention time (SRT) was shortened to 5 days, the methane production approached twice that of the contrast reactor. The expanded anaerobic digestion model, including activated sludge models, was utilized for operation simulation. The effect of sludge retention time (SRT) shortening on volatile suspended solids (VSS) digestibility and methane production was well reproduced with simulations. The research conclusion reveals the impact of pretreatment and reactor types on anaerobic digestion and provides the scientific basis for improving methane production and process efficiency in anaerobic digestion.
