Design of a Robotic Software Package for Modular Home Builder

Abstract: This paper is sharing an ongoing project about the design of a software package, tentatively coined as RS4B, for the builders of modularized construction. The shortage of labour resources and safety awareness issues have become the emerging problems in the construction industry. As the price of robots gradually decreases within these years, it is a promising direction to integrate robotic technology with the construction process to bring better productivity. However, shifting the long-term labourbased process … Show more

“…In a study, the use of a KINOVA JACO robot, a human-assistive robotic arm, was highlighted for simulating the installation of wooden panels and assisting the elderly in the BERTIM (building renovation project) and LISA-HABITEC (home automation project) programs, respectively [123]. Furthermore, other research conducted by [142] made the effort to develop a software package to assist builders in linking the original design (BIM) with robot controls. The package comprises four software components: BIM Exporter, Assembly Planner, Robot Simulator, and Motion Planner.…”

“…A modern project management requires the project team to develop a digital model for their product, which is known as BIM. Apart from robotic navigation, BIM provides a digital virtual environment for simulation and teleoperation [124]. Yang et al [125] proposed an integrated robot and the BIM package to facilitate data exchange between them.…”

“…Likewise, using a Digital Twin for Construction (Sacks et al, 2020), the process of having a robot build from a BIM and updating the as-built model using sensor data was validated (Wang et al, 2020b). At the moment, software packages are being developed to help link BIM-based design with robot control which could ease the process of future digital-to-physical model building (Yang et al, 2019). Slebicka et al (2021) placed an important vision for Fabrication Information Modeling (FIM) that intends to close the gap between BIM and Digital Fabrication that, at some point in time, will heavily depend on automation and robotics.…”
