Design of a novel constructed treatment wetland system with consideration of ambient landscape

Abstract: A 'fan-shape' constructed wetland (CW) system is designed to treat domestic wastewater as well as to provide an aesthetically pleasing and environmentally sensitive landscape with ornamental plants for recreation. The system consists of two-stage subsurface horizontal flow CW cells with dewatered alum sludge cakes as the main substrate to ensure the treatment efficiency. The system is located in a new countryside village in Northwest China. The paper presents the design considerations of the CW together with t… Show more

“…However, a few studies have been done on landscape functions and features. These valuable constructions should be considered in any integrated planning and landscape design [23]. Purifying and treating processes, avoiding floods, and retaining and managing rainwater should not be concealed but, wherever possible, be presented openly and creatively.…”

“…Moreover, water and environmental engineers typically design constructed wetlands. However, it is landscape architecture that should contribute to the design phase [23]. The park should coordinate with its neighbouring environment in constructing an urban wetland park landscape.…”

“…All analyses were performed in R (R Core Team 2015), using functions from the packages plyr, reshape, rpart and ggplot2 (Wickham 2007;Wickham 2009;Wickham 2011;Therneau and Atkinson 2018).…”

“…Most newly constructed wetlands are used for water treatment and habitat restoration for wildlife (Fennessy et al 1994;Vymazal 2007;Zhao et al 2015). To understand the functioning of newly constructed wetlands in terms of nutrient cycling, it is important to quantify production and decomposition rates.…”
