Design of a multipurpose scaled wind turbine model

Abstract: Abstract. This paper describes the methodology that was followed for designing a scaled wind turbine model. This model is intended to be used in complex terrain studies as well as deep array wind farm control tests. Therefore, emphasis was given on making it as compact as possible while keeping a high level of instrumentation. The result is a three blade wind turbine with rotor diameter of 0.6 m equipped with active pitch, yaw and torque control. After a discussion on the design procedure, we present prelimina… Show more

“…An experimental campaign was conducted in the BLAST atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnel at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). Further details on the wind tunnel and the G06 scaled model are available in Nanos et al (2018Nanos et al ( , 2019Nanos et al ( , 2022. The model was operated at its optimum tip speed ratio and pitch angle.…”

“…A full scale WT will operate at Re c > 10 6 , whilst a scaled-down model WT may operate at Re c < 10 5 . Because of this, the RG-14 aerofoil was selected due to its good performance at low Re c numbers as demonstrated in a study by Nanos et al [18]. The geometrical features of the RG-14 can be seen in Figure 2(a).…”
