PORTS information ensures that an adequate margin of safety is available to larger and larger ships in channels which are being deepened but not significantly widened. PORTS provides information permitting shippers to load their vessels to take full advantage of real-time water levels and channel improvements. PORTS information guides hazardous materials spill prevention and response as well as effective ecosystem health management. The San Francisco Bay PORTS is the model for a future National PORTS. That model is an extensible PORTS based on an Information Hub Concept (InfoHub) which will permit PORTS to adapt to evolving user needs. The extensible PORTS provides standard sensor interfaces to encourage the addition of non-NOAA sensors to the system. A data base provides a broad user community with access through downloadable applications and applets on Intemet. PORTS provides information broadcast to shipboard vector and raster Electronic Chart and Information Display Systems and a Lockheed MartidRensselaer Polytechnic Institute Navigation and Piloting Expert Systems (NPES). An open architecture design will encourage commercial and academic partners to participate in National PORTS development.

A spatial and temporal survey of the navigation channel near the SSB was obtained from three separate towed ADCP tracks from which contour plots of currents were obtained for June It ceased data transmission on June 11, 1991 and was replaced by another ADCP on August 8, 1992, at location 27'37.12' N, 82'39.25' W. The latter ADCP is part of the fully-operational Tampa Bay physical oceanographic real-time system (PORTS), and plans are for it to remain in place indefinitely [3,4]. The first location was slightly to the north of the SSB,and northwest of the center of the channel, whereas the present location is directly under the SSB in the center of the channel (Figure 2, inset).…”

This paper discusses the use of a towed acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) for the purpose of evaluating in situ current meters. Data are presented from comparison tests between a towed and bottom-mounted ADCP. Velocity contours parallel and transverse to the main navigation channel under the Sunshine Skyway Bridge (SSB) in Tampa, Florida from a 600 KHz towed ADCP are compared to bottom-mounted current profiles from a 1200 KHz ADCP placed under the SSB. Data are presented to show instrument differences which are a combiination of random and systematic error. The study finds that the bottom-mounted ADCP is measuring current speeds accurately and is in the optimal location to report maximum channel currents under the SSB. The present location of the bottom-mounted ADCP under the SSB in the middle of the main navigation channel reports velocities accurate to 5 cmls. This metho+ is considered a viable technique for evaluating the reliability of moored or bottom-mounted units.
