Design of a compounding extruder by means of the SIGMA simulation software

Abstract: The simulation program SIGMA, which can be used to assess the compounding process on tightly-intermeshing, co-rotating twin screw extruders, was developed within the framework of a joint project conducted by the Institut fü r Kunststofftechnik (KTP) of the University of Paderborn and fifteen industrial companies of several fields in the polymer industry. The program presented here permits calculations based on physical mathematical models of the pressure, temperature, local degree of filling, melting, residenc… Show more

“…More ambiguously stated similar developments are given by Potente and his coworkers [151,152] in 1996 and 1999 and by Canedo [153] in 1999. A better and more readable presentation of such a development was given by Vergnes [154,155] in 1996-1998.…”

“…Due to its comparably low computational expense, it is still the only way to develop a simulation of the entire extrusion process. For more detailed information about 1D modeling, please refer to the literature, e.g., (White and Chen, 1994;Potente and Hanhart, 1994;Vergnes et al, 1998;Potente et al, 1999;White et al, 2001;Potente and Kretschmer, 2002;Prat et al, 2002;Choulak et al, 2004;Vergnes and Berzin, 2006;Bahloul et al, 2011;Teixeira et al, 2012;Eitzlmayr et al, 2014b).…”

“…In recent years, we have developed models of this type for counter-rotating twin screw extruders [30][31][32][33][34], as have researchers in other laboratories for corotating machines [35][36][37].…”
