Design of a compact triple band antenna with independent frequency tuning for MIMO applications

Abstract: In this article, a planar, low profile microstrip line‐fed triple band multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna is presented for WiMax (2.5/3.5/5.5 GHz)/WLAN (2.4/3.6/5.8 GHz) applications simultaneously. The single element of the MIMO antenna consists of (i) a rectangular split ring resonator (SRR), (ii) a stepped impedance resonator (SIR) inside the SRR and (iii) a slot on the SIR. Each of the resonators generates its own individual band and each band is independently tunable. The antenna exhibits three… Show more

“…A circularly polarized two elements MIMO antenna is proposed in [11] in which a grounded slit is used to achieve good isolation. A triple band MIMO antenna is proposed in [12] with independent tunable characteristics. In most of the previous works different type of isolation circuit is introduced to maintain the proper isolation in multiple bands which increases the design complexity.…”

“…The disadvantage of these antennas is the lack of MIMO property. It should be taken into consideration that many MIMO antennas have been designed and presented . The multi‐band antenna presented in Reference has three radiation elements with three input–output ports suitable for wireless local area network (WLAN) applications.…”

“…However, it has narrow bandwidth and bad impedance matching in both frequency bands. Furthermore, the antenna proposed in Reference with four ports, and the antenna proposed in Reference with two ports are designed for WLAN and worldwide interoperability for microwave access applications. A multi‐band antenna with two radiation patches for GSM and LTE applications is presented in Reference.…”
